In the spirit of Thanksgiving, CAI’s government and public affairs team wants to thank our incredible volunteers who supported our public policy work in 2024 and contributed to our many successes. CAI’s advocacy accomplishments would not be possible without the unwavering commitment of our dedicated advocates and committee members.
Grassroots Advocacy
We use VoterVoice to connect constituents with legislators on important bills at every level. In 2024, more than 15,500 advocates sent over 24,000 messages to their legislators using this platform to support or oppose legislation. Our advocacy base grew significantly this year, with more than14,000 advocates sending messages to their elected officials using our online platform for the first time. The most active advocates lived in California and Florida. Visit CAI’s Take Action Center.
Legislative Action Committees
CAI’s Legislative Action Committees members monitor state legislation, educate lawmakers, recruit new advocates, and protect the interests of those living and working in community associations. Committees are comprised of homeowner leaders, community managers, and representatives from community association business partners who volunteer. Currently over 70% of U.S. states designated LACs. This year, LACs monitored over 1,200 state bills introduced in 2024, over 870 carried over from 2023, and around 65 bills at the local level. Learn more about CAI’s Legislative Action Committees.
Government and Public Affairs Committee
In 2024, this 22-person committee reviewed and updated CAI public policies on alternative dispute resolution, board member education, and fining and foreclosure ability to ensure they are relevant for today’s environment.
More than 150 people from more than 35 states attended the 2024 Government & Public Affairs meeting in May to discuss what is happening at the federal level and exchange information about what is happening throughout the states. Federal Legislative Action Committee
This committee, comprised of 16 advocacy leaders, had a busy year representing CAI members in federal advocacy. This group focused on the United States Congress, administrative agencies, and other regulatory bodies. Members worked diligently to garner federal support for CAI’s 2024 public policy priorities. This group successfully elevated CAI’s critical legislative and regulatory initiatives to representatives from several key federal offices. Learn more about the Federal LAC.
Corporate Transparency Act
In September, CAI filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Secretary Janet Yellen, and the director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, challenging the application of the Corporate Transparency Act on community associations. Although CAI’s preliminary injunction request was denied by federal judges, we continue to fight for all community associations to be exempt from the burdensome reporting requirements of the act.
In 2024, more than 9,050 CAI advocates contacted their legislators about the act to support CAI’s position. Of those who participated, 5,200 had not previously sent messages to their elected officials using our online platform. In total, over 27,000 messages were sent to nearly 500 members of Congress about this critical issue. Learn more about CAI’s work on the Corporate Transparency Act.
