August marks National Civility Month and offers us an ideal opportunity to reflect on the importance of respectful dialogue. Civility is especially important in community associations where challenging conversations may be unavoidable. Recent findings from the Polarization Research Lab highlight a growing need for civility–its studies show polarization not only divides us but also may compromise trust and cooperation within communities.
In the context of community associations, topics like reserve funding, maintenance, and critical repairs can spark intense debates. These discussions are vital for the well-being of our communities. They also require a framework that fosters understanding and respect for all points of view.
This is where Community Associations Institute’s Civility Pledge comes into play. By adopting this pledge, communities can create a foundation for productive and respectful conversations even when opinions differ. The pledge encourages board members, homeowners, and community managers to engage in ways that are constructive and focus on the issues rather than personal differences.
Adopting the Civility Pledge is more than just a symbolic act. It’s a commitment to fostering an environment where all voices are heard and valued. This approach helps make sound decisions about reserve funding and critical repairs and strengthens the community.
During National Civility Month and all year long, CAI encourages boards and communities to make a collective effort to adopt the CAI Civility Pledge. By doing so, we can transform challenging conversations into opportunities for growth and unity and ensure community associations remain strong, vibrant, and resilient in the face of all issues.
