CAI legislative action committees (LACs) are groups of CAI members who monitor state legislation, educate lawmakers, and protect the interests of those living and working in community associations. Each committee is comprised of homeowner leaders, community managers, and representatives from community association business partners who graciously volunteer their time. CAI currently has 36 state legislative action committees with nearly 600 members across the country who champion legislation that upholds CAI’s public policy positions. These committees are not political action committees (PACs) and do not give money to legislators or legislative candidates.
Each LAC organizes grassroots advocacy campaigns to facilitate direct communication between advocates and elected officials regarding important issues related to community associations. To date in 2026, 70 such grassroots advocacy campaigns have been launched by CAI in 19 states, and 8,831 community association advocates have engaged with these campaigns. By educating lawmakers, their staff, and other key decision-makers on our industry and connecting them with CAI, LACs can influence the outcome of legislation to help associations and those they serve thrive.
Annual Legislative Session Reports
As state legislative sessions adjourn annually, CAI publishes a series of resources to highlight the advocacy efforts by LAC members and industry peers, outline the outcomes of these efforts, and encourage ongoing support for CAI’s advocacy initiatives.
CAI annually distributes legislative session reports summarizing the dedicated work done by member-advocates in each state. These reports summarize key legislation considered by elected officials impacting the community association industry, LAC advocacy efforts, and other grassroots efforts from advocates like you who receive virtual calls-to-action throughout the legislative process. These reports contain timely information regarding:

- State-specific facts and figures;
- Legislative session dates;
- Information on your state’s legislative process and outline how laws are created;
- Descriptions of key legislation and LAC positions (support, oppose, amend, or monitor) based on CAI’s public policies;
- Summaries of LAC advocacy efforts (virtual and in-person) and engagement by CAI members and other supporters;
- Legislative outcomes and implications on community associations across the state;
- Information on additional CAI resources and ways to deepen involvement and impact.
All legislative session reports are posted on CAI’s website and advocacy blog and sent via email to CAI advocates in each state. Sign up to receive advocacy alert emails and be notified when your home state’s legislative session report is published each year.
Why does CAI publish these detailed reports each year? Beyond informing the public about CAI’s work in each state, these reports can be utilized to help increase awareness about CAI LACs and their critical work and encourage those living and working in any given state to donate to support ongoing advocacy efforts. The reports also can be shared with elected officials, business partners, funders, or other key stakeholders when forming relationships and collaborating to reach a desired public policy outcome.
LAC Fundraising Efforts
Alongside these reports, CAI also creates tailored fundraising resources for each LAC and CAI’s Issues Advancement Fund (IAF). CAI and the LACs depend on professional lobbyists funded by community associations, businesses, and individuals to create the best public policy for the community association industry. Continued fundraising is necessary to ensure CAI’s LACs can make a positive impact and fulfill their mission.
Individuals, organizations, and businesses can all donate to support this work. Additionally, most community association boards can legally allocate money to support CAI’s LACs. CAI’s “Dollar-A-Door” campaign is a cornerstone of LAC fundraising, encouraging communities to pledge to donate $1/door or more. CAI creates an updated form annually to highlight these efforts that can be distributed virtually or printed and passed out at industry events to encourage support.
How can you help?
Inquire with your community’s board about whether they have pledged to donate $1/door to support CAI’s advocacy efforts and encourage them to do so.
If you are hosting or attending an upcoming event such as a trade show, board meeting, town hall, or a CAI chapter event, consider bringing a few copies of your state’s most recent legislative session report and updated Dollar-A-Door flyer with you. As you are interacting with other attendees, mention that you are a CAI member and discuss the importance of the LAC’s work to encourage support.
