CAI legislative action committees monitor state legislation, educate lawmakers, and protect the interests of those living and working in community associations. Each volunteer committee is comprised of homeowner leaders, community managers, and representatives from community association business partners.

With all 50 states in session in 2025, CAI LACs host advocacy and fly-in days with state legislators to educate them on sound public policy for the community association industry.

Here’s a roundup of recent events and activities.

(Note: All statistics are based on figures compiled by the Foundation for Community Association Research.)

Florida

In January, CAI’s Florida Legislative Alliance members and advocates convened in Tallahassee, Fla., for a 2025 Advocacy Day. The event on behalf of the 9.5 million Floridians living in more than 49,800 community associations featured 40 advocates meeting with 40 legislators in support of sensible public policy for community associations in Florida.

Illinois

In February, CAI Illinois Legislative Action Committee members and advocates convened in Springfield, Ill., for ILAC Lobby Day on behalf of the 3.9 million Illinoisans living in community associations. During the visit, ILAC participated in meetings with 20 state legislators to advocate for better public policy surrounding common interest communities. Discussions largely focused on critical legislation creating sensible regulations for reserve studies for certain associations in Illinois.

Michigan

In March, CAI Michigan Legislative Action Committee members and advocates met in Lansing, Mich., for MI-LAC Legislative Advocacy Day on behalf of the 1.439 million Michiganders living in community associations. Meeting with approximately 15 state legislators and their staff, MI-LAC spent the day advocating for stronger reserve study and funding regulations and policy as well as improvements to the Michigan Marketable Record Title Act.

Missouri

In March, a dozen members of CAI’s Missouri Legislative Action Committee met in Jefferson City, Mo., for MO-LAC’s Second Annual Legislative Advocacy Day on behalf of the 948,000 Missourians living in community associations. MO-LAC met with several leadership offices and 12 state legislators to promote MO-LAC as a resource to lawmakers and constituents. Promoting support of the MO-LAC’s proposed homeowners bill of rights continues to be a priority in 2025.

Tennessee

In February, CAI’s Tennessee Legislative Action Committee appeared before the Tennessee Senate Commerce Committee in Nashville, Tenn., to educate legislators about the community association industry on behalf of the 750,000 Tennesseans living in community associations. This meeting represented a critical opportunity for CAI to connect with key senate stakeholders.

Texas

In March, the Texas Legislative Action Committee held its 2025 Advocacy Day in Austin, Texas. More than 280 advocates participated in more than 90 legislative meetings throughout the day. TX-LAC is discussing 2025 legislative priorities and fundraising strategies to ensure it has appropriate resources to build the best public policy possible for the 6.122 million Texans living in community associations over the next two years.

Virginia

CAI’s Virginia Legislative Action Committee 2025 Lobby Day was cancelled due to winter weather, but VA-LAC leaders remain committed to this outreach initiative. Leadership was able to deliver educational resource packets to key legislators in Richmond, Va., to ensure promotion of VA-LAC.

CAI’s advocacy efforts would not be successful without volunteers’ time and dedication. If you are interested in getting involved in CAI’s advocacy efforts, please visit our advocacy webpage today.

As 2025 state legislative sessions continue, several other CAI LACs are advocating on behalf of community associations. State LACs conduct fundraisers like the Dollar-a-Door-More campaign to increase advocacy efforts. Individual and corporate donations are permitted and greatly appreciated.
