CAI’s members, partners, and staff actively advocated on behalf of approximately 65,000 Alaskans living in 25,000 homes in approximately 1,000 community associations during the 2026 state legislative session.
Legislative Overview
The Alaska Legislature convened on January 20 and adjourned on May 20, 2026. Legislation not passed in odd-numbered years is carried over to even-numbered years, meaning the state operates on a biennial legislative cycle. This cycle saw a relatively quiet period for community associations, with lawmakers in Juneau focusing on other issues, such as education spending, criminal policy, and election reform.
Below is a brief overview of the 2026 Alaska State Legislature:
CAI MONITORED THE BELOW BILL
CAI LACs monitor legislation with the potential to impact those living and working in community associations across their state, as well as legislation that may indirectly or unintentionally impact community associations.
This bill, first introduced in 2025, was amended in 2026 to include legal language which would clarify that ownership interest in a common interest community is transferrable upon the death of the original owner. This bill was originally limited to the transfer of boat titles upon the death of the original owner but was expanded to include real property in a community association.
CAI monitored this bill for the potential clarifications it could bring to Alaskan law regarding estate planning.
Status: Passed by both Bodies and awaiting the Governor’s signature. Effective date is July 1, 2026.
