Whether you are a seasoned organizer or new to the world of advocacy, CAI is here to support you and help you build skills and confidence while affecting meaningful change.

Did you know that sharing your perspectives with lawmakers can effectively inspire them to act on important issues? By sharing your stories and experiences about living and/or working in a community association with your elected officials, you can inspire and motivate them to champion, support, or oppose legislation impacting the community association housing model. These interactions foster connection between people, help them better understand an issue, and drive them to act.

Telling your story and interacting with legislators directly helps diversify the voices and perspectives being heard and considered in conversations around community associations. Positive stories also can combat negative rhetoric and stereotypes that persist in the media and ensure your legislators know that Americans living in homeowners associations, condominiums, and housing cooperatives are overwhelmingly satisfied in their communities.

Make an impact. Recognize and elevate your expertise as someone who has direct experience with the community association industry. Your voice is a critical component of CAI’s advocacy, and one of the most valuable tools we have in our toolbelt. We couldn’t do this work without you.

Responding to Calls to Action from CAI

You have the power to champion policies that help community associations and their residents thrive nationwide. CAI sends advocates timely updates on legislation and advocacy campaigns in their home states, making it easy to make an impact. When you receive a call to action from CAI or an industry peer, take the following steps to participate in a few minutes or less.

      • Navigate to the campaign webpage (the URL will containvotervoice.net/CAI/”).
      • Read the information on the left side of the page to familiarize yourself with the issue(s) at hand and CAI’s position on the legislation being considered.
      • On the right side of the page, input your personal information. The system will use your address/zip code to match you with your elected officials and automatically target your messages to their inboxes.
      • Optional: Customize the form message written by CAI. Add information about who you are and what your connection is to the community association industry.
      • Review your message and hit “Submit.” Your message will then be sent directly to your elected official(s).
      • Help spread the word about the campaign.

Increase Your Impact: Spread the Word About CAI Advocacy Campaigns

After participating in an advocacy campaign, increase your impact by spreading the word. Do not assume your neighbors, friends, and colleagues are CAI members and/or aware of all ongoing calls to action. Consider taking the following steps:

      • Post about calls to action on social media or share CAI’s posts (hint: make sure you follow @CAIsocial and @CAIAdvocacy on X).
      • Forward the email about the campaign to your friends, family, and coworkers who are involved with the community association industry.
      • Print out flyers containing a QR code for the advocacy campaign and post them in highly-trafficked areas around your community (pool, gym, elevators, laundry rooms, community bulletin boards, etc.).
      • Talk to your neighbors. Verbally discuss current events and legislation when you interact with others around your community.

Thank you to all the volunteers who spend their time advocating with CAI on behalf of those living and working in community associations across the country. Tell us why you advocate for policy change. Your responses will help us inspire others to become involved in CAI’s advocacy work. Then, take a moment today to tell your legislators to support community associations. Introduce yourself, and urge your legislators to support homeowners in community associations.

Looking for opportunities to apply these lessons and deepen your advocacy? Attend and/or virtually support advocacy events at your state capitol. Learn more about how these events are planned and executed and what to expect for attendees.

You are also invited to attend CAI’s 2026 Congressional Advocacy Summit on Sept. 24 in Washington, D.C. This exciting event is exclusively for CAI members. Together, we will meet with members of Congress and their staff, advocate for industry federal legislative priorities, and represent the interests of community associations and their residents nationwide. Stay tuned for more information on how to register, coming soon.

If you’d like to join the ranks of volunteers for the community association housing model, CAI makes it easy to get involved.
