August signals back-to-school season and the end of summer for many. In 2026, it’s also the beginning of midterm election season.
Midterm elections take place halfway through the four-year presidential term and determine the composition of Congress for the next two years. This November, voters will elect all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate, shaping the 120th Congress. Across the country, states will often add other races to the ballot including governors, state representatives, and other local offices. This year, voters in 39 states will elect governors, with 18 governors running for reelection and 21 open seats due to term limits or retirements.
Community association residents have a strong track record of civic engagement. The Foundation for Community Association Research’s 2026 Homeowner Satisfaction Survey reports that 88% of residents vote in national elections, 83% participate in state and local elections, and nearly seven in 10 (69%) votes in their community association board elections. CAI encourages all its advocates to get out and vote for candidates that support the community association housing model. #CAIvotes!
Community associations are home to millions of voters whose daily lives are shaped by decisions made at every level of government. From housing affordability and insurance to infrastructure, reserve funding, and community governance, elected officials make decisions that affect how associations operate and how residents live. When community association homeowners vote, they ensure candidates understand the value of the community association housing model and the importance of policies that protect well-managed communities.
