August marks National Civility Month and offers an ideal opportunity to reflect on the importance of respectful dialogue. Civility is especially important in community associations where challenging conversations may be unavoidable. Recent findings from the Polarization Research Lab highlight a growing need for civility. Its studies show polarization not only divides us but also may compromise trust and cooperation within communities.

In the context of community associations, topics like reserve funding, maintenance, and critical repairs can spark intense debates. These discussions are vital for the well-being of communities. They also require a framework that fosters understanding and respect for all points of view.

This is where Community Associations Institute’s Civility Pledge comes into play. By adopting this pledge, communities can create a foundation for productive and respectful conversations even when opinions differ. The pledge encourages board members, homeowners, and community managers to engage in ways that are constructive and focus on the issues rather than personal differences.

Adopting the CAI Civility Pledge is more than just a symbolic act. It’s a commitment to fostering an environment where all voices are heard and valued. This approach helps make sound decisions about reserve funding and critical repairs and strengthens the community.

How Your Community Association Can Observe National Civility Month

Practice civility ourselves as community association leaders. True change within the community association industry begins with CAI members, leaders, and advocates. It is important to remember to maintain civility in all interactions with other people within your community and profession. Spend time reflecting on your actions and note how people react to them and figure out how you can better yourself in this regard.

Influence other community association peers toward civility. Your civility can inspire others, too. Be a role model so others around you maintain the same level of civility within their community association.

Raise awareness about civility within your community and offices. Have thoughtful conversations with people around you about the importance of civility within their community association. You also can drive change by encouraging various industry leaders to hold special events on civility awareness and training within their community associations and industry businesses.

Adopt CAI’s Civility Pledge. Community association boards are regularly faced with challenging and complex issues that can spark strong emotions. By adopting the CAI Community Association Civility Pledge, community association boards commit to embracing principles for effective conversations that result in decisions that are informed and well balanced for the entire community.

During National Civility Month and all year long, CAI encourages boards and communities to make a collective effort to adopt the CAI Civility Pledge. By doing so, we can transform challenging conversations into opportunities for growth and unity and ensure community associations remain strong, vibrant, and resilient in the face of all issues.

If your community association has adopted CAI’s Civility Pledge, please post on social media and tag @CAISocial and @CAIAdvocacy.
