Community associations are built on participation and civic engagement. Well-governed community associations begin with active homeowners engaged in the governance of their communities. That engagement starts with homeowners exercising their fundamental right to vote for their community’s leaders.

Civic engagement for the betterment of community associations extends beyond your neighborhood. Midterm elections in the United States take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3. With early voting already underway in many states, more than 41 million Americans have already cast their ballots.

CAI’s nonpartisan #VoteForHome initiative helps residents prepare to make their voices heard in elections for Congress, governor, state legislatures, and other offices and ballot initiatives. With research showing that 84% of community association homeowners plan to vote in all national elections, association residents represent a powerful and engaged voting community.

The CAI voter resource center helps with election preparation. On this page, voters can:

  • Check voter registration status and register to vote.
  • Sign up for election reminders.
  • Request and track your absentee ballot.
  • Review what will appear on ballots in your jurisdiction.
  • Find you polling place.
  • Learn about voter identification requirements.

Resources also are available for military and overseas voters, young people preparing to register when they turn 18, and communities interested in hosting voter registration drives.

Community association boards, managers, and residents can help neighbors participate by sharing CAI’s voter resources and reminding residents to verify important voter registration, early voting, and absentee-ballot deadlines. These simple, nonpartisan actions can help ensure every eligible voter has the information and confidence needed to cast a ballot.

Beyond voter registration and election reminders, additional resources are available on the CAI voter resource center page.

Find out what the voting rules are in your state, including whether your state has automatic voter registration or permits voter registration on election day for those that forgot to register before the deadline. You also can find out if your state offers no excuse absentee voting, early/in-person absentee voting, and vote by mail.

There’s also a link to an election protection hotline for anyone that may experience issues voting either before or on election day. And for those so inclined, check out the link to the League of Women Voters to volunteer to help staff local polling places on election day.

When homeowners and residents are engaged and participate in the election process, healthy communities and democracy itself benefit.

Nationwide, in the 2026 midterm elections, voters will elect 35 members to the U.S. Senate, all 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 36 governors, and thousands of members to state legislatures. These officials will have a significant impact on public policies impacting community associations over the coming legislative sessions. Celebrate your civic duty by sharing voting experiences and photos on social media with the hashtags #VoteReady, #CAIVotes, and #VoteforHome. Does your community association serve as a polling place on election day? If so, share that too!

By making your voice heard, you can elect officials committed to improving community association living.
