As we celebrate the holiday season and get ready to ring in the new year, 30 states are about to begin their respective legislative sessions. In 2019, CAI tracked a record number of bills: 1,500 state bills and 800 local bills. We are expecting to break this record in 2020. Although our advocates sent more than 50,000 messages to their elected officials in 2019 we anticipate needing even more engagement in the next legislative cycle.
CAI’s 36 state legislative action committees (LACs) work tirelessly throughout each state’s legislative session to ensure community association issues are heard by legislators. They work nonstop pursuing specific legislation that supports the community association housing model.
LACs represent the interests of CAI members on state legislative, regulatory, and amicus curiae activities relevant to the creation, governance, management, and operation of community associations. It is important for your LACs to have grassroots support to fund their advocacy efforts. Legislators want to hear from their constituents on these issues, and we want to be the first call a legislator’s office makes when a bill impacting our industry hits their desk. CAI supports effective legislation and regulation that ensures the community association housing model is developed, maintained, governed, and managed with sound public policy objectives and standards that protect homeowners, volunteer board members, management companies, and the association.
